Before Old Shatterhand meets Sans-Ear, after the lead-in to volume II of May's Winnetou Trilogy, Charles and his hunting friends are attacked by Sioux ... many of the men are killed, and the others dispersed across the Prairie, fleeing from the attackers. When Old Shatterhand returns to what was the camp, to investigate, he finds one sole survivor; however, the man is fatally wounded, and Old Shatterhand buries him in the morning after caring for him through the night. The hunter hands Old Shatterhand a manuscript, in which the story of Almy Wilkins and her father is told after they had to flee Wilkinsfield during the last months of the Civil War - by a former black slave.
